GROWING UP

I get excited each time I log on and see a new follower. *dances for a while and settles down*. I will like a say a big welcome to you all. You guys warm my heart. *hugs and kisses*. And to all my other followers: both the visible and silent ones, loads of love to you guys.

To my post for the day. I saw a friend's blackberry display picture and it brought back memories of my childhood days. I quickly saved the image and used it as my display picture:

As soon as I saw this picture, I burst out laughing because I sooooooo did this as a kid. It was our own interpretation of spiderman. :-).  My siblings and I had fun doing this, but it was always when our parents were not in. You wouldn't dare to do this with them at home for fear of being scolded or beaten.

How many of you slid down (or still slide down ;-) ) the banister? There was this rush of excitement I felt whenever I did this then. A lot of other kids in my compound used to do this too. It was fun watching to know who slid down the fastest.

Ohhhhhhhh, the joy of climbing trees. We had an apple tree (the naija kind) and an almond (popularly known as fruit) tree in my compound and we took turns to climb the apple tree to pluck the fruit. It was quite high, but as adventurous kids, it was fun climbing it. It had lots of branches, so that helped. The older kids climbed, plucked and threw the fruits down, while the younger kids stayed down to pick the fruits. After we were done, the fruits would be washed and shared. It was a nice way to learn division of labor and unity. :-). The almond tree didn't have a lot of branches, so we had to pluck the almond using long sticks. I especially liked the nut inside the almond.

I loved the swings and more so because I could do a lot there. We had a lot of swings at the back of the house and the kids would all gather to play. Aside from the normal seat with your bum and be pushed high up (exhilarating feeling i tell you) , I could also hang upside down and then tumble and land perfectly. Sometimes, I would push myself up and hang with my my neck for a while, before tumbling down. At other times, I would turn upside down, hang with my legs and just enjoy the scenery from upside down. ;-). The swing was higher than the one in the picture. Quite risky i know. The amazing thing is that none of us kids had any serious injury from this rather rough plays. I can't even remember I or my siblings having any injury sef.

A friend of mine saw the picture and we started chatting. She is a mother of two boys and she said she would have a fit if she saw her sons doing the spiderman thingy. I wonder how our parents coped with us. We both agreed that our guardian angels must have always been on their toes looking out for us.

I also remember tenten, suwe, cooking with sand and leaves, flying from the dining table aka superman, LOL, the fun things we did as kids.

Feel free to share some childhood games you played.

I can't believe tomorrow is Monday again. *sighs*. Where did my weekend go to? :-(

Have a splendid week y'all. *hugsssssss*

  1. Wow! In the next generation when they want to talk about their childhood you'll probable see stuffs like...

  3. This post bought a smile on my face. As a little girl growing up in Nigeria, I played ten ten with my sisters and friends. I climbed trees, ran around chasing geckos and random insects. I used stones to make a fire which didn't alway work. It was the best thing then, when I became a teenager ...the cool came was ludo. Then as an adult, technology took over.lol

The next generation would be talking of Xbox 360 games, watching movies for hours. lazy kids!

  4. Mumc didnt use to allow us play outside like that...but I definitely "cooked" a lot! I role-played as a mother, father, child, uncle, aunty....orisirisi!
Ludo was also a staple...and Whot cards. My mum liked us playing scrabble too...
    Let's just say I had a somewhat deprived childhood...lol

  5. The kids in the tree! Thats totally me and my buddies. I sure wouldn't want my kids jumping from 2nd story windows repeatedly, trying to stick the best landing. It was fun when my friends & I did though.

  6. I kukuma broke my leg from jumping down a mango tree. Sad our children will not have this experience!

  9. wow! memory lane, here i come
Ten-ten, suwe, 'my mother told me' (played with hands), 'change ur style, be like that', 'who is in the garden?', 'who stole the meat from the cooking pot?', 'kpom kpom kpom, who is that, dr who','if u are born in january come out and dance....'.

i can go on and on and on!!!

I played so very much as a kid. I was in my compound's football team as a goalkeeper (covered in 'armoured' clothings oo. My mum bought all sorts of pads - knee pad, elbow pads and a helmet!!!)

Chei, i sometimes wish i can have just one day as a 6yr old!

  12. @ Destiny: I also tried cooking with stones and sticks, but i poured little kerosene and had a fire. Boiled rice in an empty tinned tomato can. :-). As i grew older, Ludo and Snakes & Ladder were also fun board games. Kids of the next generation will miss out on those fun things.

@ HoneyDame: Your first line sounded like a kid sulking. :-). Sorry about your "somewhat deprived childhood". I bet your Momma had her reasons. Ohhh, you just reminded me of Whot cards. I wonder if they are still in existence now.

@ Think-About-It: Tree climbing was def fun, but the "tambolos" sometimes spoilt our fun. You can let your kids climb and jump off too, just keep an eye on them and pray they don't have serious injuries. It would be fun if they also have such tales to tell later on in life.

@ Hazel: I bet a lot of kids had a broken leg or arm or even both while growing up. Was it put in a cast? Did you have friends write on the cast? It's really sad that the kids of now will not have that kind of experience.

@ Wendal: The Spiderman thingy was soooo me. Glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks for stopping by.

@ Luciano: That must have been quite an accident for you to have been hospitalized for 3 months. Glad you were not scarred for life.

@ Amaka's Notepad: "My mother told me(clap clap) that she would buy me(clap clap) ,another dolly.....LOL. Thanks for reminding me of these our play songs. Your mom was fully in support o. Full goal keeper gear all for you. I'm sure she wanted you to really enjoy yourself with minimal bruises. Hmmm, to be a kid again without any cares or worries.

@ Jemima: I liked the police and thief game cos there were lots of places to hide in my compound. Sometimes sef, the thief has to give him or herself up cos he or she couldn't be found.

@ Eyesoftruth: Correct kid jare feeling like mommy and boiling rice. I even went as far as scraping tomato puree from the can after it has been discarded. Anything to make my own rice look very real.:-D. Glad to take you down memory lane.

  15. @ A-9ja-Great: You done did them all abi. Lol. I like that song. Whenever I hear it, I just unconsciously start to tap my feet and move to the beat. :-D. I used to roll tires too, but it was the metallic kind of tire. You roll it with a metallic stick curved at the edge. It wasn't very easy for me to roll the tire though.

@ Sisi Yemmie: Would love to hear of your other escapades as a kid. Thanks for stopping by.

  21. What about mother may I? My sisters and I made some kobos from that spider man stunts o.The lady who lived in our boys quarters lacked a bit when it came to organization, she sometimes locked her keys in her room and she would then need someone to scoot inside through the top where there is a loose panel to get into the room to open her door. It was fun till my mom caught us, then she spoke to the lady and punished us. Oh well that was then and I sure had fun outdoors, till i discovered books. My kids slide down the stairs on their stomach and i worry. Meanwhile I did worse growing up

  23. @ Okeoghene: It's pretty cool that you made money from the spider-man stunt. I can't remember "mother may I". "Hi five" for allowing your kids to slide down the stairs. I'm sure they see you as a cool mom. ;-). As for the worrying, just remind yourself that God is watching over them even as they play.

@ Unveilinggold: Awwwwwww, sowiiiiii for making you miss naija so much. I played that game of hitting one's hand while they try to remove it, but never knew the name. The fake golf course sounds cool. I didn't do that. Lol @ kpangolo. I wonder how we came about those names or who gave them those names? I'm glad you loved the post. (((((((huggsssss)))))
